As I talk to prospective workshop participants I am often asked what I mean when I talk about writing prompts.
A writing prompt or writing exercise can be a phrase, a few sentences or an exisitng piece of written work used to stimulate a writer's creativity and get the pen moving on paper. An example is "you made me angry when you said..." Open ended sentences can be used to start pieces of dialogue for existing characters or to stimulate the creation of narration.
Prompts can also be visual cues, musical cues or video snippets. A prompt can be smells like liquid bleach or a piece of orange.
Prompts are used to move a writer to action. They are often used as writing warm-ups or writing practice. -- Sue |
